Guitar Lessons for Adults in Little Rock

Most of my students are adults. They are in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s. Some have never held a guitar. Some played years ago and want it back. Casual player or pro level, you're welcome here.

I don't just teach people to play guitar. I teach them how music works.

Who it is for

  • Adults who have never played before.
  • Adults coming back to the guitar after years away.
  • Players who feel stuck and want to get better.
  • People who just want to play for fun. That counts too.

My students are adults and motivated teens, 13 and up.

Electric and acoustic, both welcome

I teach electric, acoustic and classical guitar. Rock, blues, jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, metal, fingerstyle, singer-songwriter/Americana, and more. My lessons are built around regular music, the stuff most people actually want to play. Jazz and classical are taught by request, and I'm fully qualified to teach both.

Besides guitar, I teach bass, mandolin, ukulele, dobro and banjo. For players who want them, I also teach arranging, composition and improvisation.

How it starts

Step 1. Book a free 15-minute phone call. Any time, day or night.

Step 2. We meet at the studio for a no-obligation, 30-minute free consultation. This is our chance to get to know each other, discuss your goals, maybe play a little, and plan how we can achieve your goals together.

Step 3. Your weekly lessons begin.

What a lesson is

Every lesson is private, one on one, in person. Lessons are 30 minutes, once a week. That's four lessons a month, billed monthly. I go over the rate on the free 15-minute call. Advanced students may be able to do hour-long lessons. We talk about that case by case.

Coming from work? I keep extra guitars at the studio for business clients. You don't have to lug a guitar around all day. All you have to bring is your book.

The goal is that you leave every lesson knowing exactly what to practice all week.

For adults, technique matters. I teach correct left and right hand technique from day one.

How much practice? I meet adults where they are. I know you're busy, and I never push anyone past their limits. Most adults do fine practicing 2 to 4 days a week. The more you put in, the more you get out.

Your book and your practice apps

I've written my own curriculum, called Street Guitar, and I build my own tools to enhance it.

  • The book. The Street Guitar book is in your hands from the start. We tie it to songs you love, so every technique makes sense in your own playing.
  • Practice apps. For students who want them, on your phone, tablet or computer. Each one is built for the exact thing you're working on this week.
  • Short clips. I'll also frequently have you film short clips of me playing what we're working on. You can watch them when you practice at home.
  • Questions between lessons. Ask me. Text me, and I'll call you back Monday through Friday, mornings or evenings. I don't take calls or texts on weekends. That's family time.

Find people to play with

If you're an adult looking for people to play with, I have my own in-house network. I connect students with each other. Some I connected 10 years ago still get together once a month to play. Others have gone on to start their own bands.

Who you'll learn from

I'm David Dunavant. I've taught guitar for 27 years, including guitar faculty jobs at four universities. I grew up playing blues, rock, country, folk and acoustic instrumental music.

  • Bachelor's in Music, UA Little Rock.
  • Master of Music in Jazz Guitar, Bowling Green State University.
  • 111 five-star Google reviews.

I've studied how playing guitar improves memory and cognitive function. As far as I know, no other guitar teacher in Arkansas has. That matters to a lot of my adult students.
